Projects for Schools

We have vast experience in using digital media as a tool to engage people within educational settings. We understand the school curriculum and we are able to work with educators and students to develop and deliver projects that inspire both the students and the teachers, offering short taster days through to long-term digital residencies.
These projects cover not just media literacy, but enhance the teaching of subjects such as English, Science and Maths.

In the past we have had great success with using digital media to enhance the curriculum, especially in Maths and Science teaching in secondary schools which are struggling to engage pupils with these subjects.

While we like to tailor make workshops for every location we have a couple of off the shelf offers for school groups. They can be delivered with primary and secondary schools.

Take 1: This film in a day workshop is designed for a class. The group will work with 2 of our experienced facilitators to learn the basics of film making, including shot type and composition. In small groups they will then plan and film a short story, the challenge being they need to do each shot in one take so the whole piece is edited in camera. At the end of the session the group get to watch all the films. The beauty of this workshop is it teaches the very fundamentals of film making and doesn’t allow for work to be randomly shot and fixed in an edit. It promotes team work, planning and creativity. The session can be based around a specific class topic or subject. Take 1 can also be delivered as an animation workshop.

Take ½: This is ideally suited to activity days or to fit into a double lesson. It's a super speedy version of Take 1. All wrapped up in under 2 hours. For the best value we recommend delivering several of these sessions in your school in 1 day.

Take 2: This is a 2 day film making workshop which is designed for a class or group of students. The group will work with 2 of our experienced facilitators to learn the basics of film making including post production. Day 1 includes learning the basic shot types and how they are used together in the construction of a film. The group then devise, plan and shoot their film. The next day they learn the basics of post production. For this session we can either use the school's own editing equipment or provide a suite of laptops running iMovie or Final Cut. This workshop is ideal for media studies students and we welcome the participation from teachers who want to develop their own skills.

Early Years ICT Work: Sara has been developing work in using ICT in early years settings. She is working as the resident digital media practitioner at St Philip's Marsh Nursery in Bristol on a project which is partnered by the Institute of Education, University of London. She has seen this work develop young children's communication skills and enhance their development. She has been working closely with the staff at the nursery and we can work within early years settings which are keen to develop their own work in this area. Please call Sara and have a chat.
